The Activa DBS System uses Medtronic's superior DBS technology.
The Activa System includes three components, which are implanted completely inside the body:
- Neurostimulator – A pacemaker-like device that is the power source for the system. It contains a small battery and computer chip programmed to send electrical pulses to control PD symptoms.
- DBS™ Lead – Insulated wire with four electrodes that are implanted in the brain.
- Extension – An insulated wire placed under the scalp that connects to the lead and runs behind the ear, down the neck, and into the chest below the collarbone where it connects to the neurostimulator.
You also will be given:
- Neurostimulator control magnet – A magnet that turns your Activa System on or off when held over the system; or
- Access Therapy Controller – A handheld electronic device that allows you to turn your Activa System on or off through radio frequency.
